Evangelism 101

Living the Great Commission

For the Son of Man came to Seek and to Save the Lost (Luke 19:10)

That is evangelism 101. We are not greater than Christ. If He is concerned for the lost, so should followers of Christ. He has commissioned the church to go and make disciples of every nation.

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent," Romans 10:14-15?

Be Intentional
Evangelism is communicating the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit to unconverted persons at their point of need. The intent is to bring about conversions and to incorporate them into the church that they may have eternal life. This involves bringing people to: 1) repent of their sins; 2) put their trust in God through Jesus Christ; 3) accept Jesus as their Savior; and 4) serve Jesus as their Lord in the fellowship of His church [Anderson, 54]. There are many methods of evangelism in which to engage. A few of the more popular methods are:

  • Prayer Evangelism
  • Servant Evangelism
  • Personal Evangelism
  • Corporate Evangelism
Within the above categories, are numerous ways of engaging people. However, it is important to remember that some efforts, as Paul says, will result in planting and others in watering; but God will give the increase. That said, the role of an evangelist is obedience and faithfulness to the call. God will bring about the increase according to His plan.

Jeff Vanderstelt [Gospel Fluency, 2018] explains that most Christians don’t really know why we need the gospel, what it is, why it is good news, or what it actually does―at least not enough to apply it to everyday life. It’s not that they can’t know it well, but most aren’t being equipped to become gospel-fluent people. He continues to say that we fail to truly help the lost if we don’t give them Jesus.
